Our first Monday night event took place at Hazel Grove Golf Club on January 14th in spite of a dusting of snow on a few of the holes. This was a five hole event over holes 1, 2, 3, 14 and 15.
It’s been a few years since I played Hazel Grove but it’s a great course and I used to visit regularly in the winter because the USGA greens were always in play when my course was shut or on temporary greens. It was always good value.
I think what struck us most about this event was the enthusiasm with which everyone at the club (from James and Ben to every single member) embraced Night Golf. The feedback from everyone was fantastic and the support of a very proactive Head Professional in James Rowlands was crucial to the event succeeding – thankfully only one lady member fell in a bunker!!!
We had ice forming on the lights and flags by the end of the night but it didn’t seem to bother anyone (except the marshall who had to clear up) and a special thanks to Ben Thompson who braved the cold for most of the night on the 14th green ensuring the members were having a good time.
The whole club were a pleasure to work for and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we get an invite back sometime. It’s their Centenary Year this year – we genuinely wish them every success with it.
